The Concept of an Information System for Seafarers

The aim of the analysis, carried out at the commission of the Estonian Waterways Department, was to optimize the processes related to the seafarers’ certification. Analysts of Krabu Grupp prepared a number of recommendations and created a prototype of the information system, which will facilitate both the work of officials and the processing and obtaining documents necessary for seamen to confirm their qualifications. The creation of an appropriate information system and the relevant legislative base will allow to reduce by 2-3 times the time costs for seafarers and officials for processing and issuing the documents, and to increase the number of seafarers registered in Estonia at least twice as many.

Krabu Grupp extended the customer’s Moodle learning environment with a custom Document Sign-Off plugin. Once an employee finishes reading, they set the status to Done; the system instantly stores the user, timestamp and document version and feeds the data into a real-time compliance report.
